10 Dark and Mysterious Drawing Prompts for When You Want Something Eerie

Some of the best drawing prompts live in the shadows. Dark and mysterious scenes force you to think about what you don’t show — what’s hidden in the darkness, what’s just out of frame, what the viewer has to imagine for themselves.

Abandoned & Uncanny

What time do the clocks show? That’s part of your story.

The emptiness is the subject. Draw the absence of people.

The broken glass catches light. The shadows absorb it. The contrast is everything.

200 years of digging — what does that do to a person’s face and hands?

The tenderness is what makes this dark, not the death.
Surreal & Unsettling
“A staircase that leads to itself, in a house where every door opens to the same room. Quietly uncanny. With a dramatic monochrome palette.”
Escher meets horror. The geometry is the monster.
“Inside a mirror that shows a world slightly wrong. Strange and familiar at once. In deep shadow and bright highlight only.”
What’s “slightly wrong”? That’s the most interesting question in this prompt.
“A landscape that is slowly being erased, with a figure standing at the intersection of past and future. Veiled and unknowable.”
How do you draw something being erased? Fading edges, dissolving forms, white space creeping in.
“A ballroom where the dancers have been frozen mid-step. Tense with hidden meaning. Lit by a single dramatic light source.”
Frozen motion is one of the hardest things to draw well. This is a great challenge.
